George Alton Evans, known by his friends as Buster, age 86, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 16, 2016. He had been a resident of Westbury Nursing Home a little over a year.
Mr. Evans was born in Jackson on February 22nd 1930 to the late William Samuel Evans and Ruby Vera Wright Evans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lilla Eloise Evans in 2002. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis Evans, Rufus Evans and Weyman Evans and by two sisters, Martha Evans Jenkins and Sylvia Polk Garrison.
He is survived by one sister, Peggy Evans Wilmot and her family and by his five children:
Maria Evans of Jackson, GA, Billy Evans of Gracewood State School and Hospital in Augusta, Lisa Hartley of Warner Robbins, Deanna Earnhart of Jackson, GA, Michael Evans of Thomaston, GA and seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Evans was a Navy veteran stationed on the USS Iowa and served during the Korean War. He was a Mason with a 52 year membership in the St. John’s Lodge #45 in Jackson. He retired from Ford Motor Company’s Hapeville plant in 1996 after 31 years of service. Buster was an avid golfer and well-known rabbit hunter, who loved to raise and run his beagles.
Funeral services for George Alton “Buster” Evans will be Wednesday, October 19th 2016 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Dr. Ed Hoard will officiate with interment in the Jackson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 PM.
