George W. Jobe passed away at home in Turtle Cove on Saturday morning, April 9 at 92 years of age. He was born and raised in Alcorn County, Mississippi and was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Taylor Jobe and Dovie Lee (Houston) Jobe and by his brother, Joe Taylor Jobe.
He graduated High School from Biggersville High School in Alcorn County in 1947 and received a Baccalaureate degree from the University of Omaha in 1964, He received an MBA from Auburn University in 1972. He graduated from the Air Force Command and Staff College and then served as faculty for the U.S. Army Health Sciences Academy in San Antonio, Texas and as Adjunct Professor at Baylor University’s School of Health Care Administration in San Antonio.
He served 27 years in the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel before his retirement in 1977. His military career took him all over the United States and to assignments in the Azores Islands and the Philippine Islands. In the Philippines, he was Operations Officer of the 57th Aero-Medical Evacuation Squadron, bringing wounded American soldiers out of Viet Nam and transporting them to military hospitals. He flew more than 200 missions. During that time, he also volunteered for and participated in the famous Son Tay Raid on the Vietnamese Prisoner of War Camp.
After he retired from military service, he was appointed to the Mississippi Health Care Commission, first as Chief of Health Planning and eventually Executive Director. He dedicated his attention to the health and well-being of the citizens of Mississippi, especially senior citizens and those in nursing homes. He was invited to serve on President Johnson’s Committee on Aging. He volunteered with local literacy programs, going into the local jail to teach inmates to read so that their abilities to support themselves could be improved. He was Chairman of the Mississippi State Legislative Committee for Mississippi AARP, and then served as Mississippi State President for AARP. He served on the Turtle Cove POA Board of Directors.
In retirement, he enthusiastically enjoyed karaoke and could be heard at various locations around the Monticello area. He truly loved his karaoke friends and enjoyed knowing them and listening to them as much as he loved singing for them.
He recently was awarded a Veteran’s Quilt of Valor in a ceremony at Turtle Cove clubhouse.
He married Betty Sue Elam in 1952, and they enjoyed nearly 70 years together. In addition to Betty, he leaves behind his children Deborah King (and John Martin), Greg Jobe (and MaryBeth Davis), Teresa Jobe (and Terry Colvin), and Melanie Guffin (and Arty Guffin).
Grandchildren are Penny Bonner, Steven King (and Amanda Rodgers), Shannon Wasulko (and Jason Wasulko) and Sara Wright (and Andrew Wright), Jacy Breneman (and Justin Breneman), Melissa Davis (and Brent Davis), Jennifer Daniel (and Jon Daniel). He also leaves seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, April 15 at Haisten Funeral Home in Jackson Georgia. Visitation begins at noon; Funeral begins at 2:00. J. J. Jobe of Corinth, Mississippi will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Jasper County Community Food Bank.
