James Edward Dodd

Mr. James Edward Dodd, affectionately known as Hoot, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 87. He was born on Sunday, September 25, 1938, in Waverly, Tennessee, and lived a life marked by devotion to his family, steady work, faith, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.                                                                                                                                                    
Hoot was a loving and thoughtful man whose presence brought comfort and strength to those around him. He was known for his kind heart, his dependable nature, and the quiet way he cared for others. Family meant everything to him, and he treasured the many years he shared with those he loved. He especially valued the close bonds he maintained with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, and extended family.

 He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Alaine Dodd, as well as his parents, Jeanette & Anderson Dodd, his sister, Dorothy Flowers. Their memories remained close to his heart, and he carried their influence with him throughout his life.                              

Hoot was a graduate of Waverly High School, Class of 1957. After completing his education, he went on to build a strong work ethic that would define much of his life. He served as a foreman for CBI Services, where he built water tanks throughout the southeastern United States. His work reflected his dedication, skill, and commitment to doing a job well. He was respected by those who worked alongside him and by those who knew the value of his steady leadership.

He also served his country in the National Guard. He was a member of the Church of Christ in McDonough, where he found fellowship and strength.

Hoot found joy in the everyday things that made life meaningful. He enjoyed gardening and took pride in caring for the things he grew. He loved NASCAR and college football. He was also known far and wide for making the best cornbread around, a special touch that many will remember with a smile.   

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Tina & Kirk Welch of Jackson, Tracie Lynn & Joey Melton of Buford. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Luke Dalton, Bella Rocha, Layton Dunn, Stephanie Hawkins, Brandon Hipke, Rachel and George Campbell, and Eric Welch, along with his great-grandchildren, Faith Hawkins, Camile Reeves, and Luke Hipke. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters in law, Robbie & Jan Dodd and Andy & Rita Dodd, all of New Johnsonville, TN, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special nephews, including Wayne & Shari Dodd, Allen & Kendal Dodd, and Wesley & Tammy Dodd, T.J. & Nicole Dodd.

Those who knew him will remember a man who lived with humility, warmth, and devotion. His life was a blessing to his family and friends, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him. His legacy is one of faith, hard work, family devotion. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from noon until 2:00 PM, the funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, with Dr. Benny Tate and Mr. Wayne Dodd officiating. Burial will take place at Jackson City Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers the Family ask that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
