James Lewis Obituary

Mr. James Richard Lewis, age 81, passed away Thursday evening, September 29, 2022 at WellStar Spalding Hospital. He was born on the Family farm in the Ola community of Henry County on Wednesday, March 5, 1941 to the late Grover & Mildred Cardell Lewis, later at the age of 14 he moved to Hampton with his Dad. Richard was a 1959 graduate of Henry County High School, and a proud Veteran of the United States Army. After his service in the Army, he began his career with Southern Railroad, retiring as a Conductor. He then started a second career in the gas station and convenience store business. He was the former owner of the Big Gulf Station in Jackson; he also managed several other convenience stores for Jones Petroleum Co. in and around the Butts County area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson and the Worthville Masonic Lodge. Richard was an avid sports fan, he loved to watch college sports and the Jackson Red Devils when his children and grandchildren were playing and the Georgia Bulldogs, he also loved NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Richard is survived by his wife; Darlene Vela-Lewis, two daughters and sons in law; Bill and Joyce Lewis Fears, Mickey & Tyronne Stowers all of Jackson, and two sons; James Lewis, Jr. “Ritchie” of Griffin and Jeffrey Scott Lewis of Corpus Christi, TX, stepson; Carlos Vela of Jackson, along with 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and one sister; Martha Jo Dendinger of Atlanta. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his previous wife, Dianne Lewis.

A Funeral Services to celebrate the life of James Richard Lewis will be held Monday, October 3, 2022 at 11 AM in the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, Dr. Benny Tate will officiate, burial will follow the service in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The Family will receive friends Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 4 until 6 PM at the Funeral Home.
