She met a handsome young USAF officer (future fighter pilot) from Jackson, GA named Bob Hammond while in Valdosta and they married on June 29, 1952.  Together they spent twenty-eight years in the USAF with tours in the US and in Germany (her favorite assignment).  During that time, they were blessed with three children, Debbie, Cindy and Doug.  Joanne stayed active in Officers’ Wives’ Clubs and bridge groups throughout their USAF career.  The family moved to, and eventually settled in Ft. Walton Beach, FL.  Upon Bob’s retirement in 1978, Joanne worked for the Okaloosa-Walton Community College in the 80’s and 90’s as a GED teacher at the Elgin AFB Federal Prison.  She and Bob managed to travel extensively across the US, England, Scotland, and Germany with family and close friends over the years.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and her brother.  She lost her beloved husband in January 2020 and relocated to Charlotte, NC.  Joanne is survived by her children, Debbie (Bruce) MacAllister of Santa Fe, NM, Cindy Hammond of Freeport, FL, and Doug (Julie) Hammond of Charlotte, NC.  She will be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She leaves behind her dear sister-in-law, Betty Tyler Scott (née Hammond) of Sarasota, FL, her nephew, Allan (Tina) Tyler of Sarasota, FL, niece, Christie (Mike) Hamilton of Jackson, GA and many friends in Ft.
