Born November 5, 1948 to Elena Lewis and John Wesley Carter, Johnny was a lifelong resident of Jackson. He attended Mrs. Louise Powell’s kindergarten often arriving in a goat-pulled wagon, pulled by his sister, pulled by his sister, Nancy. Graduating from Jackson High School in 1967, he furthered his education at Georgia Southwestern and Southern Tech. Having worked for Mr. L. W. May during his high school days Johnny continued selling gasoline the rest of his life. May and Carter Oil Company is in its 48th year of operation.
Married to his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth, for 47 years, they enjoyed traveling together; often with little plans other than a final destination. In Johnny’s heart, the adventure was half the fun.
In 2012, Johnny suffered a major health event that eventually resulted in daughter, Alison, donating a kidney. This allowed him to enjoy another five plus years of living. He didn’t coin the phrase, “Everyday is a gift”, but he said it an awful lot!
Perhaps Johnny will be most remembered for his love of flying. He especially enjoyed giving “first flights”. Most recently he was privileged to volunteer with Angel Flight, providing transportation for those needing medical treatment. His love of adventure was always expanded with flight, and one of his greatest enjoyments was sharing that with others.
A member of Jackson United Methodist Church, Johnny served on the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees, among others. He was a faithful member of the Carr Sunday School Class. Johnny proudly served on the board of directors for the Daughtry Foundation for 20 years, and enjoyed taking his grandchildren to Dauset Trails for walks and animal spotting. Johnny supported the activities of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as scoutmaster during his son John’s years in scouting. Johnny achieved the rank of Life in his youth, and was exceptionally proud when son, John achieved his Eagle Rank.
