Lyda Stephens Obituary

Lyda Mae Pelt Stephens (GanMama), age 95, of the Stark Community went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 17, 2017. She was born April 9, 1922 in Butts County to William Troy Pelt and Florence Chasteen Pelt. Ms. Lyda was the beloved wife of the late Otis P. Stephens who passed away October 19, 2005. She assisted her husband for many years at the home farm tending to the farm animals, the vegetable gardens, her beautiful flowers, and churning butter to sell at the local family business. She was a fixture in the meat department of Stephens Grocery which her family owned and operated for over 52 years, retiring in 2000. She was a dearly loved lady, always making the needs of others her priorities. Ms. Lyda was a member of the Worthville Baptist Church for over 70 years where she served in various ministries, including Sunday School Teacher, Children’s, and Women’s Ministries. She was a wonderful cook, known for her Squash “Puppies”, cakes, and “Po Man’s Peach Pie”.

Survivors include her son, Robert P. “Bobby” Stephens; grandchildren, Leigh Ann Stephens (Randy) Brown, Leslie Alane Stephens (Joe) White, all of Jackson; great grandchildren, Tiffany Brown (Matthew) Leslie of Covington, GA, Mary Beth Brown (Kris) Long of Griffin, GA, Scott (Sarah) Brown of Montgomery, TX, Joey White, and Lauren White (Bryon) Hartman of Jackson; great great grandchildren, Nate Brown, Kate Brown, Miranda Leslie, Hunter Leslie, Ansleigh Long, Pierce Long; God-given great great grandchildren, Joshua Hartman, Jacob Hartman, McKinsee Long; brother Sammy Pelt (Medora) of Barnesville, GA; sisters, Margaret Tomberlin of Dallas, GA, and Leila (Whitey) Smith of Jackson; several nieces and nephews. Other than her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her son Ronald A. Stephens in 1990 and her daughter Betty M. Stephens in 1969; daughter-in-law Jeannette W. Stephens in 2001; great granddaughter Audrey A. White; brothers Ernest Pelt, B. F. Pelt, Emmitt Pelt; sisters, Alma P. McElheney, Nellie P. Kimbell, Emily P. Jones, and Emma Pelt.

Funeral services for Lyda Mae Pelt Stephens will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 3:00PM at the Worthville Baptist Church. Rev. Argin Floyd, Rev. Wendall Banks and Rev. Dale Davis will officiate with interment in the church cemetery. The body will be carried to the church at 2:00PM. You may visit the family at the funeral home Monday evening from 6-8PM.
