Margaret Mathis Obituary

Margaret Ann Maffett Mathis, a cherished pillar of the Butts County community, a beacon of love and strength to her family, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on July 14, 1931, in Monroe, GA, Margaret's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and dedication to those she held dear.                                                       

Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Enos and Annie Maffett, her devoted husband of 66 years, Bennie F. Mathis, her caring son, Larry Mathis and her cherished daughter, Carol Reeves. Her siblings Mable League, Elsie Mae Couch, Doris Milloy and Frank Maffett also preceded her in death. She leaves behind a legacy of love and memories to forever be cherished by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Shirley Mathis. Margaret's absence will be felt by her daughter-in-law, Angie Mathis, and her adored grandchildren, Vanessa (Kevin) Potts, Michael (Stephanie) Batchelor, Michelle Batchelor, Misty (Steven) Ledford, D.J. (Taylor) Mathis, and Rebecca Miller. Her great-grandchildren, Logan (Sydney), Madalyn and Ansley Potts, Miriah Ogletree, MiChon Wright, McKenzie, Collin, and Kristen Ledford, Bennie "Lane" and Shelby Mathis, will miss her warmth and guidance. Margaret's brother, Gerald Maffett, will hold dear the memories of their shared childhood and lifelong bond. Several nieces, nephews and cousins will miss her being the glue that held everyone together. 

Margaret's professional journey was marked by her tenure at American Mills, where she worked for several years before co-founding Mathis Brothers, a family Bar-B-Que restaurant she operated for 25 years. Her work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were an inspiration to many.

A lifelong member of the Monroe Church of God, Margaret's interests were being with her family, extended to her love of watching golf on television and her enthusiastic support for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. Her passion for the team was infectious, and she could often be found and heard cheering them.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones for visitation on Saturday, December 6, 2025, beginning at 1 PM, at the Funeral Home with a service following at 2 PM in the Chapel Pastor Jeff Clegg will officiate. Margaret's life will be honored and celebrated, reflecting on the countless memories she created with those around her. Her final resting place will be in the serene Hill Haven Memory Garden located in Monroe, GA, where a burial service will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2026, at 11 AM.

Those entrusted with the honor of carrying Margaret to her final resting place include Eddie Kersey, David Lunsford, Michael Castellana, Jared Smith, Lee Summers, and Ronnie Dodson. Mike Peters and Bennie “Lane” Mathis will serve as honorary pallbearers, a tribute to the special place they held in Margaret's heart.

Margaret Ann Mathis will be remembered not only for her contributions to her family and community but for the unwavering love, resilience, and joy she brought to life.
