Melvin Crandell Obituary

On Thursday, October 20, 2022, Melvin Gordon Crandell, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 84 in Monticello GA. Mel attended High School in Ossining NY, graduating in 1955, where he met and married his High School sweetheart, Cleva.  They were married 64 years.  Mel also attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering and spent his entire career at Xerox Corporation in Webster NY.  Mel retired from Xerox and was able to spend 30 years of retirement with his loving wife.

Mel was adventuresome and loved to explore, whether by boat, motorhome or motorcycle.  Mel had a passion for the outdoors where he could snowmobile and hunt.  He achieved the difficult task of obtaining his boating Captain’s license early in his retirement which is how he obtained his nickname “Captain”.   Mel had a great love for music whether it was playing the drums in marching bands, listening to country music, or humming into his harmonica.  Mel was also an avid reader of nonfiction books and always had the TV tuned into a nonfiction movie or documentary.  Mel was an achieved Boy Scout in his youth and became a Boy Scout leader as a parent.  He was a man that collected everything, and he could fix anything.

Mel was best known for quiet demeanor, fierce determination, problem-solving abilities, generous spirit and love for his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cleva, and their four children, Blane Crandell, Brenda Crandell, Kimberly Gilbert, Heather Visconti and their spouses.   He has four grandchildren, April, Cody, Courtney, Whitney and their spouses along with six great grandchildren.

Mel requested no funeral or formal memorial, but instead for those he left behind to celebrate his life by remembrances and memories they have of him. In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass to Mel.
