Miller Moelchert, age 100, passed away in her sleep on Sunday morning, January 31, 2016. She led a long, eventful and meaningful life enriched by many friends and family. After her 100th birthday party this past December, she received numerous commemorative letters which chronicled her many lifelong relationships. She told the family that they made her so happy, and she hoped each of them could also live to be 100 and experience such happiness. Many of the letters were written by children of her closest friends and they regaled her with stories of her cherished and well-lived life. Emily Miller Bailey was born on December 8, 1915, to Roy Bailey and India Miller Bailey. She grew up in Athens,Georgia, but some of her fondest childhood memories were of trips to Clermont, Georgia, where many of her relatives lived. She often told stories of the wonderful times spent there with family and friends. Her aunts and uncles were of earlier, more colorful times, as they had grown up before the telephone, automobile, or airplane had been invented. They had equally colorful names such as Ida, Amanda, Homer, Flossie and India. Miller’s mother used to have house parties in Clermont as a young lady in which the guests stayed for two weeks, for they had the leisure of a slow-paced way of life. Miller met the love of her life, Louis “Lou” William Moelchert, from Erie, PA,while he was a student at the University of Georgia studying Forestry. It was typical of the students to hitchhike to class, and that is how they met. In Lou’s quirky fashion, he left a note under her windshield wiper asking, “How’s about a date? Answer same”. She was to leave an answer in a note under her windshield wiper, which she did! This was the first of many of Lou’s stories, which Miller often joyfully recounted. They were happily married for 66 years, the majority of which were lived in Jackson, Georgia, where Lou owned and operated the local hardware store. Long time members of the First Baptist Church, they knew almost everyone in the county, which in the 1960’s numbered no more than 3,500 residents. Being of such a close-knit rural community, they figured largely in the lives of many families. They were also avid Georgia Bulldog fans, and for over 40 years, traveled to each home and away football game. Miller is survived by her two children, Louis “Lou” William Moelchert, Jr. (Carol) of Richmond, VA, and Homer Miller Moelchert (Emily) of Montreal, Quebec, two grandchildren: Louis “Chip” William Moelchert III (Jennifer) of Richmond, VA, and Laura Miller Moelchert (Lee) of Crozet, VA, and five great grandchildren: Cooper, Zachary, Braden, Colby, and her namesake, Miller. Each was uniquely special to her, and she cherished her time with them. One could not write about Miller without mentioning how she loved to entertain and cook for her family and friends. The Moelchert family had a small cottage on nearby Jackson Lake and frequently entertained in the warmer months. Every summer, her children and grandchildren spent time at Jackson Lake enjoying Miller’s shrewd card-playing skills and wonderful cooking. Before leaving Jackson for Richmond, Miller published a collection of her favorite recipes to give as remembrances to her friends. She gave one to each of her great grandchildren as well, and she loved knowing how much they enjoyed making her "specialties". Miller’s family would like to express their gratitude to the many friends that played a central role throughout her life. A Memorial Celebration will be held at First Baptist Church in Jackson, GA on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 11:00AM. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service.
