Philip Bunch Obituary

Philip Walker Bunch, age 89 years, died Friday, March 15, 2019 after a brief illness. Philip was born on August 17, 1929 to Reginald Bunch and Lena Walker Bunch. He was preceded in death by his siblings: two sisters, Reggie Dean Small and Jeanette Bunch Cook and brother Glynn Baxter Bunch. Philip graduated from Jones County High school where he excelled in academics and participated in sports. He served two years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a radio operator in Germany. In 1954, he married Shirley Jeannette Chapman who preceded him in death. Philip married Martha Hough Lindsey in 1984 and she also passed away prior to Mr. Bunch.

During his lifetime, Mr. Bunch had several successful businesses. As a teenager, he worked in a peach packing shed and the Gray, Georgia Movie Theater. Later, he worked for Bunch Lumber Company; Philip worked for many years at Hodges Hardware on the square where he developed an interest in hardware and appliance repair. He and three other Butts Countians formed a corporation and opened a larger store which remained open for a number of years. After selling their shares, Philip and his best friend, Russell Cawthon opened their own appliance repair business which Philip managed after Russell’s passing until his retirement in the early 2000’s. Even as late as February 2019, customers would still call Mr. Bunch to work on their appliances; order parts, or just ask for his advice. He served others with a true servant’s heart and enjoyed visiting with his family and friends.

Philip is survived by two daughters Debbie Bunch Phillips and husband, John of Jackson and Denise Bunch Hodges and husband, Joe of Griffin, GA; three grandchildren Shirley Hodges Hendricks (Phillip) of Laurel, MS, Betsy M. Hodges of Griffin, GA, and Edward P. Phillips of Covington, GA; two great-grandchildren Caroline Cherie Phillips of Hoschton, GA and Sebastian Hendricks of Laurel, MS, long-time friend Juanita Biles of Jackson plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
